What is the power of listening?  – IGW Insights Issue #21

Welcome to IGW Insights Issue 21!

The people around us, who work with us and for us, are human beings. Sometimes they feel misunderstood. Rejected. Uncertain.

Every single one of them feels unbeautiful at times. This feeling of uncertainty is, at best, a distraction, taking people’s heads out of the game. At worst it destroys productivity entirely.

We as leaders can take care of our people without sacrificing productivity. Click here to read more.

Recommended Reading and Listening

For me there are writers whose work makes me feel as though I’ve just had the most wonderful full-body massage. Loose, renewed, relaxed. In today’s newsletter I reference a poem from Mary Oliver’s collection, Blue Horses: Poems. Those poems make me feel that way. As if I’ve gone through an automatic dough-kneading machine. Strong recommend.

And for those of you looking for something a bit more feet-to-the-ground, I’ve just finished the audiobook version of Bjorn Lomborg’s Best Things First. At IGW, we frequently talk about Thomas Sowell’s admonition that, “There are no solutions, only trade-offs.” When you hear a person in a leadership position stump for solutions, what you’re hearing is ideology. When you hear a person in a leadership position make a recommendation based on a courageous analysis of trade-offs, what you’re hearing is leadership. Best Things First is a breath of fresh air. Be advised, it is data-heavy. It’s not an afternoon-on-the-veranda-with-mint-juleps read. I actually found it better digested via audiobook, in small chunks. Enjoy!

Journaling Exercise

Get yourself in a quiet place and set a timer for ten minutes. Here’s today’s writing prompt:

  1. What is the most important progress I’ve made as a leader since the beginning of 2024? What about since Q3?
  2. We’re almost at the mid-point of Q4. What is one thing, if accomplished at the highest level, that would allow me to finish 2024 strong?
