Hashtags Learned the Hard Way

Sometimes people hate taking sides. But some crises are so emphatic that whether we like it or not we are shoved onto a side.

The way we know it is when we hear the opposite side and our heart rate increases – that’s the fight-or-flight response.

The writer Lionel Shriver once said in an interview, when asked how she gets ideas for her books, “I pick something to be outraged about and then I write a book.”

Sometimes we don’t get to pick the things we’re outraged about. But I can tell you this: if you feel outrage, you have been shoved onto a side.

For Shriver, it’s worth the sweat and loneliness of writing a book.

What is your outrage worth for you?

The complainer stops at the outrage. The leader identifies the fight worth fighting and gets down to business.
