The leader’s scheme of things – IGW Insights Issue #20

Imagine if we leaders of teams, organizations (and families) could create crystal-clear expectations. If we could guide teammates through experiences as challenging as possible, but no more challenging than necessary, in service of those expectations, to help them make their greatest contribution. If, alongside the work, we could initiate teammates in the ways and customs of the organization, accepting them as one of our own.

How do we suppose that would make them feel? What kind of energy would that culture elicit from our teammates? Mere compliance? Sacrifice?

Recommended Reading and Listening

When the leader defines purpose, it allows everyone in the organization to invest their best efforts in something meaningful. This creates a sense of belonging. Purpose is the mortar, and employee investment is the bricks. Simon Sinek’s book Start With Why is a deceptively quick read. The book, which was an expansion of Sinek’s smash-hit TED Talk, will make you think about the emotional core of your business. Why you do what you do, beyond the surface achievement of growth, profit, brand strength. Worth a read.

Journaling Exercise

Set a timer for 10 minutes. Put pen to paper and journal the following prompts:

  • Do you have an employee/teammate who fits your culture, but perhaps needs some professional development and/or encouragement?
  • What can you do to create a feeling of growth and autonomy in this person?
  • What experiences can you create for your whole team to build a sense of connection and belonging?
