When you hear the word “leadership,” who or what comes to mind?
Leadership is that uniquely human energy that unlocks the will inside of others to dedicate their best efforts to a worthy and meaningful outcome.
It’s made up of four parts:
- Confronting Reality to Define Meaningful Work
- Aligning Work Tasks to Individual Capabilities
- Creating a Culture of Investment
- Generating and Investing Human Energy

Leadership finds its way into every nook and cranny of life, anywhere that people must move forward toward a worthy goal together. It sets itself emphatically in relief when that worthy goal is most extreme. To my mind, the story of Earnest Shackleton and the early 20th-century voyage of his ship The Endurance is a bold example of what I’m talking about.
Shackleton had an incurable itch to conquer the Antarctic. I would call his life story the stuff of legend except that it all happened and has been meticulously documented over the last century by journalists and historians.
Alfred Lansing’s book Endurance is a heart-pounding rendition of the tale. Come for the story that gets more and more insane page by page, stay for the lessons in leadership.
Journaling Exercise
Set a timer for 10 minutes. Put pen to paper and journal the following prompts:
- Who are the gifted leaders I’ve personally worked for (or took a class from, or got coached by…)?
- What made them great at leadership?
- What did they do differently and what was the result?
